I am a Professor of Criminology with a research and scholarship focus on immigration and border security. Before transitioning to academia, I spent over 15 years in immigration, customs, and border security, working in various investigative and enforcement roles.
As convoy blockades multiplied during the COVID-19 pandemic, the RCMP conducted its most serious operation in the small village of Coutts, Alta. A judge recently found that two protesters involved in blockades were ready “to engage in a war with police.” With exclusive access and an investigation that spanned nearly three years, The Fifth Estate goes inside the world of the accused.
Indian law enforcement agencies are alleging links between inks several colleges in Canada and two ‘entities’ in Mumbai accused of trafficking students across the Canada-U.S. border. Criminologist Kelly Sundberg says Canada’s honour-based immigration system is being exploited by transnational criminals, yet it has virtually no oversight or enforcement.
Former CBSA officer Kelly Sundberg says the Canadian government has neglected border security for a decade and isn't prepared for the 'tsunami' of people who will head toward its border if Donald Trump's administration carries out its promised U.S. mass deportations.
Kelly Sundberg, a former Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer, says the ‘vast majority’ of people who immigrate to Canada are hardworking people trying to make a better life, but there is ‘a cohort of people’ who want to hide or do harm. He said ‘it's very concerning' that Canada doesn't have the capacity to screen for those who slip through the cracks.
Former CBSA Kelly Sundberg says Canada needs to 'take immigration seriously' and utilize the technology available to do so.
A former Canadian Border Services investigator says our country doesn't have the legal ability or staff capacity to get tough on human smugglers. Kelly Sundberg, an associate professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary, worked in immigration for 8 years. Sundberg says with 500 immigration investigators and 200 police officers working 35,000 refugee claims a year -- the whole system is under-supported. Canada cannot contact the country of origin -- for fear claimants' families suffer the consequences. And even though the refugees are finger printed - those prints are only checked against Canada -- USA and a few European countries; meaning a match is highly unlikely.
Donald Trump’s border czar Tom Homan called the Canadian border with the U.S. an "extreme national security vulnerability" that he says he’ll deal with when Trump’s administration takes power. But how concerned should Canadians be? Ex-CBSA agent Kelly Sundberg says Canada has been neglecting border security for a decade now.
Former CBSA officer Kelly Sundberg says Alberta's premier has ‘identified’ Ottawa is not meeting its obligations to protect the border.
VICTORIA - There are signs a ship containing Tamil migrants is edging closer to the coast of Vancouver Island expected to land in BC. Officials are putting the final touches on preparations for the ship's arrival and /A\ News has learned Canada Border Service Agents across the country are travelling to BC to help process the migrants. And as those plans gear up, some are wondering whether the government is doing enough to curb more boat loads of would-be refugees.
